Meet the Band: Cat Saxofone

CAT SAXOFONE
Q: What has been your role with the band?
Cat: I play saxophone with them, mostly tenor saxophone, and on the last few shows with them this year I started playing clarinet as well.
Q: How did you come to be a part of the band?
Cat: I believe it was because of a drummer named Jamie Sunshine. I believe she put my name in, I think maybe two years ago. I think it was for kind of a small festival in Upstate New York or Pennsylvania or something.
Q: What song is your favorite to perform and why?
Cat: I would say probably “The Feldmans,” because Maury has the crowd form a circle, and he has them switch directions and stuff, and the crowd’s always really into it. It’s a good song - that one’s always really fun.
Q: What is your favorite part of being in the band?
Cat: I would say it’s good original music. Maury, he does a really good job writing music, and that’s hard to come by. A lot of people are writing music that’s just, you know, it is what it is. A lot of so many people in especially Western New York, are just doing cover bands, which can be fun, but to be involved with somebody writing good original music is really special, and it’s a good time. That would probably be my favorite thing.
Q: What is your favorite story about being in the band?
Cat: We did this kind of like corporate gig in New York City and it was very bizarre. Everything about that gig was so strange. It was my first gig ever in New York City. It paid well too.
Q: Who are your musical influences?
Cat: I would say my favorite saxophone players are probably Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane and Kenny Garrett just to name three of them.
Q: If you could perform with any musician, who would it be and why?
Cat: I would say Louis Cole, because he’s my favorite drummer. I love his music and he puts together really cool bands.
Q: What are you excited about in regards to the band?
Cat: I would love to do more music festivals, because the ones that we do have been really cool. They’re kind of small music festivals I’ve never heard of before, but the crowds will be really receptive. And the stages will be nice, like Maury does pick really cool venues to perform at, so not even just specifically festivals, but there’s always something cool and new. Yeah, that’s all that’s coming up. Just play. Playing more stuff is always going to be fun.
Q: What other musical projects are you working on now?
Cat: Right now, I’m in a band called Blaised and Confused. It’s, you could say, a progressive rock band. We have an EP right now that we’re waiting for mastering to be done. It’s supposed to come out relatively soon, whenever that gets done. Some Buffalo based bands I’ve been with for a couple years now. That’s really fun. Also, recently, I’ve been picking up more musical theater programs, like I play in the pit orchestra for some theater and opera shows, and that has been a cool new thing for me as well.
